275,400. Why is that number significant? We use 275, 400 sweet corn seeds to plant 8.5 acres of SWEET CORN. Starting the first or second week of April, depending on the weather, we make 17 consecutive plantings of SWEET CORN a half acre at a time. 16,200 seeds per half acre. We expect an 80% germination rate, leaving us with 12,900 plants per half acre. If every plant yielded a harvestable ear, that would give us 1,080 dozen per week. Not every stalk yields a harvestable ear, so we generally end up with 1,000 dozen per week. We actually order about 350,000 seeds so we can have extra for replants and sometimes that’s how the math works out on the seed order. Similar math goes into each crop, as we plan the seed order each year. We actually plant different varieties of corn in the beginning of the season. Our main season corn, can’t handle the cold soils in the Spring. Our early season varieties (Revelation, Harris 1001, Cuppa Joe, Allure) are actually cold soil tested. Sweet Corn doesn’t like soil temps that are near 50 Degrees, but that’s where we are in April. Our Main Season corn (AP426) needs 65 degrees to germinate. Our soil doesn’t reach this temp until the first week of May. We plant the AP426 from the first week of May, until the last week of July, our last planting. Remember all of our veggies, INCLUDING our SWEET CORN, are NON GMO!
