Sweet Corn Planning for 2017

It’s February and we’re thinking Sweet Corn at here at Miller Farms.  We traveled to the Hershey Lodge in PA on Wednesday to attend one day of the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers Association meeting.  The meeting is a 3 day meeting, but we only went for the Sweet Corn portion of the meeting.  There was a round table discussion on how to get Sweet Corn earlier.  Usually sweet corn is ready around the last week of June.  Last year because of the weather, we didn’t pick until July 9th.  July 9th is unacceptable.  So we gained some tips and ideas from folks that focus on growing Sweet Corn.  The trick is getting plastic laid in early Spring when weather can be iffy for laying plastic, but that’s are goal.  We plan on laying plastic in the middle to end of March and planting by the first week of April.  We will be planting seeds directly into the black plastic (the same type of plastic that we use for Strawberries).  Once planted, we will cover with row covers, like we do the Strawberries.  The row covers will increase the temperature, germinate the corn sooner and then protect it from frost in the early part of Spring.  We’re excited for #SWEETCORN
