STRAWBERRY UPDATE: TODAY, (Friday, May 12th) is the day to PICK STRAWBERRIES!
The picking will be VERY GOOD today, Friday May 12th. There is a Good quantity of RIPE STRAWBERRIES in the Patch and the Weather is PERFECT for picking.
Looks like Rain for Saturday, so TODAY, Friday May 12th is the BEST time to pick!
AND today is a GREAT DAY for Hand Dipped Ice Cream cones with Creamy Homestyle Ice Cream from South Mountain Creamery!
PLEASE read to the end so you have all of the information. The patch will be OPEN today, all of Friday May 12th, and we will have a good amount of pre-picked STRAWBERRIES in the Market today.
Not sure about Pre-Picked for Saturday. We’re going to pick hard all day today so that we can have Pre-Picked STRAWBERRIES as long as we can Saturday. Looks like RAIN coming in for Saturday so let’s get these berries picked out of the PATCH.
Do not make plans for Saturday yet until we post about Saturday at the end of Friday.
Sorry for all the uncertainty, but the uneven ripening and volume of Strawberries in the patch is common among Strawberry farms this year. We know growers in the Va. Beach area, who have been picking since early April and they’ve been experiencing the same fluctuations as we are. Their patches have been open for a couple days, then closed for a couple of days.
So PLEASE check our posts before coming to pick. We are making decisions daily on picking conditions and whether or not we will have pre-picked. We want you to have the BEST picking experience possible and to pick the BEST Strawberries possible, so we are making these decisions daily.
There are about 40 rows of STRAWBERRIES. The 25 rows or so closest to the Greenhouses have the most ripe Strawberries and are fairly full at this time. The BEST picking is on those rows. Remember to only pick fully red strawberries. A strawberry will not ripen once it’s been picked.
The Strawberry Patch is located across the road from the Market. Just past the big water tanks and Greenhouses. Containers are located in the Red Hut at the Field or at the Market. Check out is at the Market. Pre-Picked Strawberries when available @ $5/pint. Free Parking. Park at the Patch convenience. Free Admission. Free Fresh Air.
