STRAWBERRY UPDATE FOR May 9th. We do not have pre-picked Strawberries for Today or Tomorrow. The Strawberry Patch is OPEN for pick your own STRAWBERRIES. Come early if you want to pick. Depending on the number of pickers today, we may get picked out. We will post when we get picked out. Not sure of the Status for Saturday, it Depends on today.
We have PLENTY OF FRESH PEACHES and FRESH BLUEBERRIES in the Market for today, and Saturday. We will not have any pre-picked Strawberries.
Many of you are asking……What’s going on with the Strawberry crop this year? We were waiting to answer until we knew for sure ourselves. Each Strawberry farm is having their own issues in different ways this year. Strawberries get planted in the Fall, normally mid September. The strawberry plants that growers received in the Fall were of poor quality due to many different factors lining up together. Poor quality plants combined with an exceptionally dry Fall, resulted in poor crop establishment. Many plants died shortly after planting and continued to die over the Winter. We lost about 2/3 of our plants. We plant 3 acres each year, so in effect we only have an acre’s worth of plants. The Strawberry plants that survived, are yielding, just not very well. The Strawberry patch will be open off and on this season, depending on Fruit volume. We are not pre-picking any Strawberries. If we pre-picked, we wouldn’t have enough volume for the Market and there wouldn’t be any for pick your own. We made the decision to partner with Horton’s Produce to provide you with the Freshest Produce possible. We had Early Strawberries from South Carolina when they were available. We were unable to get Strawberries for the weekend. The rain that moved through here and South Carolina last weekend and the beginning of this week prevented the growers from picking high quality Strawberries. We hope to have more Pre-picked Strawberries on Monday, but we won’t know until Monday.
We have stocked up on BLUEBERRIES and PEACHES so we can all have FRESH FRUIT. We know that it’s not the same thing as FRESH STRAWBERRIES, but we like FRESH FRUIT and we know that you do too! We are as disappointed as y’all are with the Strawberry Season.
Check our posts each day before coming to the farm and we will keep you updated.
