#Strawberry and #tomato protection. It looks like we’re in for another cold snap! Winds blowing 20 mph out of the north-northwest, bringing in cold air. Hard to believe temps in the upper teens in the morning and then highs in the 70’s this Saturday. During the last cold snap, we felt that we were prepared. The sweet charlies had a lot of blooms, so we double covered them with row covers. Our main crop Chandlers, only had buds so we single covered them. The 2 covers over the Sweet Charlies wasn’t enough. Many of the blooms got burned. These blooms would have produced strawberries in 3 weeks. Even though we lost those blooms, the strawberry plants have produced more blooms. So this time we are pulling a third cover over them to protect these blooms. The Chandlers still just have buds and will be fine with a single cover. New to the game this time, are the tomatoes. We planted Saturday in our high tunnels. Our high tunnels don’t have supplemental heat so we will be blowing heat in with some propane heaters. Tomatoes don’t like unvented propane so we have to cover the plants with plastic to keep the propane fumes off of the plants. It will be a busy afternoon getting it all done. We don’t mind the work, just trying to protect the crops so we can harvest for you! #buyfreshbuylocal and support your local farmer! Still time to sign up for our 2017 CSA! We’ll see you at the farm!
